Ashikaga, Tochigi - Definition

Ashikaga (足利市; -shi) is a city located in Tochigi, Japan.

As of 2003, the city has an estimated population of 161,259 and the density of 906.87 persons per km². The total area is 177.82 km².

During the Heian Period, Ashikaga was developed by Minamoto no Yoshikuni, whose descendants later became the Ashikaga clan.

The city was founded on January 1, 1921.
