Asterix and the Big Fight is a French comic book, the seventh in the Asterix series. It was written by Rene Goscinny and illustrated by Albert Uderzo. Originally called Le Combat des chefs in French and published in 1966.
Plot summary
The Romans have once again been humiliated by the Gauls. Felonius Caucus, right hand man of Centurion Nebulus Nimbus, head of Totorum fortified camp, suggests a Big Fight.
The Big Fight is a Gallic tradition where two Gallic chiefs fight and the winner becomes leader of both tribes. To fight Vitalstatistix, the Romans enlist Chief Cassius Ceramix of Linoleum, a Gallo-roman collaborator. Vitalstatistix, chief of Asterixs tribe, would surely win with Getafixs magic potion of invincibility, but Obelix accidentally puts Getafix out of action with a menhir.
Cassius Ceramix looks sure to win but Getafix recovers just in time to give Vitalstatistix to courage to win despite not having any potion. Vitalstatistix returns home victorious to the inevitable feast.
Influences
The Gauls collaborating with Romans recall the French who collaborated with the Germans in the Second World War. Cassius Ceramixs name is based of that of Cassius Clays, better known as Muhammad Ali, based on Cassius Ceramixs boxing ability. It also is into parts, the first ending in us, characteristics of Roman names in the Asterix books.
