The city's southern part Krylbo is an important railroad junction between the Hallsberg - Avesta (Krylbo) and the Avesta (Krylbo) - Mora lines. The city is mostly famous for its steel mill owned by the Avesta-Sheffield company.

The most successful sport team in Avesta is their speedway team Masarna, translating to "the men of Dalecarlia", competing in the highest division in Sweden.
