Avon, Massachusetts - Definition and Overview

Avon is a town located in Norfolk County, Massachusetts. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 4,443.

History

Avon was first settled in 1700 and was officially incorporated in 1888.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 11.8 km² (4.6 mi²). 11.3 km² (4.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.16% water.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there are 4,443 people, 1,705 households, and 1,220 families residing in the town. The population density is 391.7/km² (1,014.7/mi²). There are 1,740 housing units at an average density of 153.4/km² (397.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 93.45% White, 3.74% African American, 0.27% Native American, 0.92% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.77% from other races, and 0.86% from two or more races. 1.44% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,705 households out of which 26.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.5% are married couples living together, 12.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.4% are non-families. 23.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.61 and the average family size is 3.13.

In the town the population is spread out with 22.5% under the age of 18, 7.0% from 18 to 24, 28.8% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 91.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.0 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $50,305, and the median income for a family is $60,625. Males have a median income of $41,582 versus $32,837 for females. The per capita income for the town is $24,410. 6.6% of the population and 4.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 12.5% of those under the age of 18 and 4.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
