Being awake is a state of consciousness, the opposite of sleep. Communication and ambulation are generally conducted while awake, except in the case of sleepwalking. Animals can run, walk and eat while awake; humans can also talk, listen, write, read and productively think and work in the awake state. Awakening usually starts with the opening of the eye lids.
