The town Baarn

Baarn received city rights in 1391.

Although named after the village of Soestdijk, which is largely in the municipality of Soest, the Soestdijk Palace is in the municipality of Baarn. It was the home of Queen Emma, Queen Juliana and Juliana's husband prince Bernard. Castle Drakesteijn lies in the village of Lage Vuursche, and is also owned by the royal family. It was the home of Queen Beatrix (then princess) and her family before she was crowned queen in 1980. In the early 1980s, the family moved to Den Haag (The Hague). Crown prince Willem Alexander and his brothers went to school (Nieuwe Baarnse School and Baarnsch Lyceum) in Baarn before their move to Den Haag.

Baarn has a nice shopping street, called 'Laanstraat'. In the North-West (Hoog Baarn), there are very pricy houses with big gardens. Other places include 'het Cantonspark' (a botanic Garden), Kasteel (=castle) Groeneveld. In the north and west there are polders, and the river Eem is nearby. In the east and south there are woods, all with good possibilities for cycling.

It has a railroad station, with trains going every half hour to Utrecht (30 minutes) Amersfoort (5 minutes) and Amsterdam (about 40 minutes). The A1 highway runs close to Baarn.

Eembrugge

Eembrugge is a small village on the river Eem, east of Baarn. It received city rights in 1300.

Lage Vuursche

Lage Vuursche, formerly also known as De Vuursche, is a small village in the woods southwest of Baarn. Drakestein, a former residence of Beatrix, is located close to the village.
