Baccarat (town) - Definition and Overview

Baccarat is a town in France of about 5000 inhabitants in the Department of Meurthe-et-Moselle in the south of the region of Lorraine.

In 1764, King Louis XV granted permission to the Bishop of Metz to establish a glassworks at Baccarat. The Cristallerie de Baccarat (Baccarat crystal) is world-famous for its glass and crystal artwork, and the Musée du Cristal, owned by the Cristallerie, is Lorraine's biggest private museum.

The Church of Saint Rémy also boasts artistic glass windows.
