Backstreet Boys - Definition and Overview

The Backstreet Boys, or BSB, are a boy band and pop group formed in 1992 by manager Lou Pearlman that grew to considerable popularity in the late 1990s, but quietly slipped away from the charts by the early part of the 2000s. The Backstreet Boys often competed for the same audience that popularized rival boy band *NSYNC.

History

Originally from Orlando, Florida, the band's members include Nick Carter, Kevin Richardson, Kevin's cousin Brian Littrell, AJ McLean and Howie Dorough.

The name Backstreet came from a restaurant in Florida that Brian had discovered.

At their peak, the Backstreet Boys had a wildly excited following among pre-teen and older fans, predominantly female, and across many international markets. By 2001, the group had sold over 50 million albums worldwide, a number that earned them a spot in the record books.

Perhaps best known for their 1999 hit, the ambiguously longing "I Want It That Way," the band also ruled the charts with back-to-back #1 releases, beginning in 1997 with "Backstreet's Back," "Quit Playin' Games (With My Heart)," followed by "As Long As You Love Me." Later hits included "Shape of My Heart," and "Drowning."

The band went on hiatus for three years as its youngest member Nick Carter launched a solo career that saw limited success with the release of a rock-pop album Now Or Never in 2002.

On December 10, 2003 the Backstreet Boys reunited on Oprah. They hit the studios in early 2004 to start recording their yet untitled fourth studio album. It is set for release in early 2005, most likely March.

In late January 2005, their next single, most likely "Poster Girl", is due for release.
