In autecological studies bacterial growth can be modelled with four different phases: lag phase (A), exponential or log phase (B), stationary phase (C), and death phase (D).
In reality, these phases are not so well defined, and the curve is much more continuous. Bacterial growth can be suppressed with bacteriostats, without necessarily killing the bacteria. In a synecological, more real, situation, in which more than bacterial species is present the growth of microbes is seen to be more dynamic and continual.
