Bad command or file name was an infamous error message on Microsoft's MS-DOS operating system.

It was the same as a "Syntax error" message on BASIC interpreters of the 1980's, and both resulted from mistyping a command or the path to the file being loaded is incorrect.

Novices had trouble understanding the message, so in later versions it was changed to "'xyz' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file."
