Bahuvrihi Bahuvrihi

Bahuvrihi - Definition and Overview

A bahuvrihi is a nominal compound, in which the compound refers to something that is not specified by any of its parts by themselves. Typically, the last element in such a compound is a noun, and the compound as a whole functions as an adjective. Bahuvrihi is a Sanskrit word composed of bahu "much" and vrihi "rice", but translated "having much rice", denoting a rich person — a person who owns a lot of rice. Examples of English Bahuvrihis are redhead, highbrow, halfwit, white-collar and similar.
