A ball-peen hammer is mostly used to work on metal. One end of the hammer head is hemispherical, which makes it perfect for particular jobs.
The original function of the hammer, and the source of its name, was to expand and shape the free end of copper roves, light rivets and similar, "setting" the rivet in place to complete the joint. This process is known as peening.
