The town of Bandon (Irish: Droichead na Bandan) in County Cork is located 27 km southwest of Cork City, Ireland, on the N71 road. Bandon is sometimes called the "Gateway to West Cork". The town dates from the early 17th century.
Due to its high proportion of Protestants and its once-thriving market, a common saying concerning Bandon is "where the pigs are Protestant".
Having a population of roughly 7,000 people. Bandon is situated on the River Bandon between two hills. The name in Irish means "Bridge of the Bandon (river)", referring to its purpose as a crossing point on the river. In 2004 Bandon had its 400 year celebrations.
