Barbara Levy Boxer (born November 11, 1940) is United States Democratic Party politician who has been a United States Senator representing California since 1993. Throughout her political career Boxer has been a vocal advocate for environmental issues, women's rights and gun control. Due to her liberal stances, she is often a political target of conservative groups. Boxer is Jewish.

Born Barbara Levy in Brooklyn, New York, she graduated from Brooklyn College in 1962 with a degree in economics and then worked as a journalist and a stockbroker.

Before joining the Senate she served six years on the Marin County, California Board of Supervisors, which included a term as the first woman president of the board. She then was elected to the United States House of Representatives and served there for 10 years. In 1992 she won an open Senate seat, and was reelected by a comfortable margin in 1998. In 2004, Boxer won by over 20%, garnering the most votes in the history of California and the third highest vote total in 2004 (third only to George W. Bush and John Kerry). In late 2004 Boxer was appointed as chief deputy whip for the Senate Democrats, her job being to line up votes on key legislation. Writing a novel to be published by Chronicle Books. On January 6, 2005, Boxer was the lone senator to support the unsuccessful challenge of the 2004 U.S. Presidential Election results by a group of congressmen from Ohio. She called the challenge her "opening shot to be able to focus the light of truth on these terrible problems in the electoral system". [1] (http://boxer.senate.gov/news/record.cfm?id=230450)

She continued to openly condemn the integrity of the Bush administration. During the Secretary of State hearing she challenged Condoleezza Rice to admit to mistakes allegedly made by the Bush administration in leading the U.S. into the Iraq War.

Boxer and her husband Stewart Boxer have two children. Their daughter, Nicole Boxer, married Tony Rodham, brother of United States Senator Hillary Clinton, in a ceremony at the White House in 1994. The couple had one son, Zachary, and they divorced in 2000.
