Barwani also known as Badwani or Siddh Nagar, is a town in southeastern Madhya Pradesh state of India. The town is situated near the left bank of the Narmada River, and is the administrative seat of Barwani District.

Barwani was the capital of a former princely state, also called Barwani. The rulers, whose title was Rana, were Rajputs of the Sesodia clan, connected with ruling dynasty of Udaipur. Though the family lost most of its territory during the Maratha invasion in the seventeenth century, it never became tributary to any Maratha chief. Under the British Raj, Barwani was a state the Bhopawar agency of Central India. The state lay in the Satpura Range south of the Narmada; area, 1178 sq mi, population (1901) 76,136. Many of the inhabitants are Bhils. The forests were under an British official. After India's independence in 1947, the Rana of Barwani acceded to India, and Barwani became part of the Nimar District of Madhya Bharat state.

Barwani District

Area 3665 sq. km., population 1,081,039 (2001 census). Barwani District lies south of the Narmada River, which forms its northern boundary, in the southeastern corner of Madhya Pradesh. The Satpura Range lies to the south. The state is bordered by Maharashtra state to the south, Gujarat state to the west, Dhar district to the north, and Khargone district to the east.

Barwani district was created on May 25, 1998, when it was separated from West Nimar (Khargone) district. Barwani is the administrative seat and chief town; the other major town is Sendhawa, which is a center for cotton ginning. Other places of note include:

• Anjad, a town that is home to the Veereshwar Mahadev and Nagari Mata temples.
• Bawangaja, 6 km. from Barwani, is an important Jain pilgrimage center. Kumbhakarna and Indrajeet were said to have attained Nirvana here, which is commemorated by 11 fifteenth-century temples. It has world's tallest statue of the Jain Tirthankara (saint) Ajitnathji.
• The ancient fort of Bhawar Garh (Borgarh) is located in the Satpuras, 16 km from Sendhawa.
• Beejasan is a temple of Goddess Beejasani (Durga), located 20 km south of Sendhawa.
