The Battle of Chattanooga was a battle in the Civil War, occurring from November 23rd to November 25th 1863. Confederate General Braxton Bragg took his time to get from Chickamagua, site of a previous Northern defeat, giving the Union soldiers time to prepare for the coming assault. Bragg's troops were ordered to Missionary Ridge and Lookout Mountain, both of which had excellent views of the Chattanooga and the Union's supply lines. Confederate troops launced raids on all supply wagons heading toward Chattanooga, which made it neccessary for the Union to find another way to feed their men. The Union government, alarmed by the potential for defeat, sent reenforcements, led by Ulysses S. Grant, aided by William F. Smith. Devising a plan known as the "cracker line", Smith used the Tennessee River to get supplies into Chattanooga, greatly increasing the chances for Grant's forces. Taking advantage of the fact that Confederate General James Longstreet was moving toward Major General Ambrose Burnside near Knoxville, Grant sent for reenforcements led by Major General William T. Sherman, who then assaulted the Confederate forces at Missionary Ridge. Bragg, sensing defeat, sent his forces from Lookout Mountain to aid the battle at Missionary Ridge. More forces were brought in, troops led by Major General Phillip H. Sheridan and Brigadier General T. J. Wood. Despite Grant's orders, the newly arrived troops charged up the Ridge, scattering the Confederate forces and taking Missionary Ridge. |
