The Battle of Degsastan was fought in 603 AD between the Anglo-Saxon king Aethelfrith of Northumbria and the Scots under Aedan of Dalriada. Aethelfrith carried the day, although Aedan survived as King of Dalriada until 608 when he was succeeded by his Son Eochaid, but we know almost nothing else about the battle, not even where "Degsastan" was supposed to be. Some suspect it was Liddesdale.
Aethelfrith and went on to establish Northumbria as the union of Bernicia and Deira, while the Dalriadans refrained from attacking the Angles for many years thereafter.
Aethelfrith was the last pagan king of Northumbria. His successor was a Christian. The Venerable Bede named him "Ravin as the wolf" - in respect of his utter ruthlesness in battle.
