The Battle of Harlaw was fought near Aberdeen in Northeast Scotland, July, 1411. Donald of the Isles (MacDonnell) and his invading Highlanders were defeated. Professor Child collected and published a ballad The Battle of Harlaw that remembers this event (Child Ballad 163).
This battle, regarded by many today as the conflict between Highlanders and Lowlanders which killed the expansion of Gaelic influence, was one of the most brutal battles in scottish history, becoming known as the Red Harlaw.
