Five tough but inconclusive naval battles were fought between various British ships, under Hughes, and a French fleet, under Suffren, off SE India in 1782-83. Both fleets were trying to support their land armies along the coast, and were occassionally reinforced by ships sent out from Europe. The final battle, Cuddalore, was fought after Peace had been declared in Europe because news hadn't been received in India.
