Beaver Township, Pike County, Ohio - Definition and Overview

Beaver Township is a township in eastern Pike County, Ohio. As of 2000, the population was 1,269. The township is named for Beaver Creek which flows through it toward the Scioto River to the west. The township has an area of 23.5 mi², 80% of which is wooded, and the rest is mainly agricultural. Beaver Township is unorganized in the sense that there is no township government, and all local government functions are filled by Pike County.

History

Beaver Township was one of the original six townships recognized when Pike County was organized in 1815. Its original area was reduced in 1801 to provide part of the area for Seal Township, and again in 1848 when Union and Marion Townships were formed from its area. The first settlers arrived within the current township in 1801.

Geography

The township is bordered by Jackson Township (north), Jackson County (east), Marion and Union Townships (south), and Seal Township (west). The village of Beaver, Ohio is on its south border, and was incorporated from Beaver and Marion Townships.
