Beedrill (Spear (スピアー Supiā) in the original Japanese) is a fictional Pokémon character. Beedrill is a Stage 2 Bug-type that evolves from Kakuna at level 10. Beedrill can fly at high speeds and possesses three poisonous barbs, two at its forelegs and one at its tail. It sometimes appears in swarms.

Name origin

The name Beedrill originates from the words bee and drill. Its name also means spear in Japanese.

Availability

In Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow, Beedrill can be obtained by evolving Kakuna. In Gold, Silver, and Crystal, Beedrill can also be found in the wild in the National Park. In Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, Beedrill is not available at all.

Strengths and weaknesses

Beedrill is vulnerable to Fire, Flying, Psychic, Rock and - in Red, Blue and Yellow - Bug. It is strong against Grass, Fighting and - after Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal - Poison and Bug.

Anime Appearances

Beedrill first appeared in the Pokémon anime when Ash Ketchum was going through Viridian Forest, putting him into a life-threatening situation that only his Butterfree could save him from. The only problem is that it remained an unevolved Metapod during most of the episode.

It also appeared again in the Johto National Park during the Bug-catching contest that Ash participated.

Beedrill swarms also appear as large threats or obstacles in many other episodes, or as a Trainer's Pokémon.
