Belle van Zuylen - Definition and Overview |
|
|
Agnes Isabelle Emilie de Charrière, also known as Madame de Charrière and Belle van Zuylen, (1740 - 1805) was a Netherlands-born writer who lived most of her life in Switzerland.
She early made a name for herself as an outspoken and educated woman; Frederick II of Prussia called her the "Goddess of the Netherlands", to which she replied "Goddesses are from heaven and not the lowlands".
In 1771 she married her brother's tutor M. de Charrière, and they moved to Colombier near Lausanne.
She associated with Benjamin Constant from 1787 to 1796.
