Berkeley Fast File System - Definition and Overview

In computing, the Berkeley Fast File System (or FFS) is a file system used mostly by Unix operating systems. It is an optimization to the original filesystem used by Unix System V (called just 'FS') and has evolved into UFS which is used by most Unix derivatives today.
