Bernalillo is a town located in Sandoval County, New Mexico. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 6,611. It is the county seat of Sandoval County6.

Bernalillo is located at 35°18'34" North, 106°33'7" West (35.309363, -106.552032)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 12.2 km² (4.7 mi²). 11.9 km² (4.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.34% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 6,611 people, 2,309 households, and 1,724 families residing in the town. The population density is 554.9/km² (1,436.9/mi²). There are 2,473 housing units at an average density of 207.6/km² (537.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 60.17% White, 0.74% African American, 3.92% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 31.34% from other races, and 3.63% from two or more races. 74.75% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,309 households out of which 40.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.1% are married couples living together, 18.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.3% are non-families. 20.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.86 and the average family size is 3.30.

In the town the population is spread out with 31.0% under the age of 18, 9.9% from 18 to 24, 28.5% from 25 to 44, 21.4% from 45 to 64, and 9.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 93.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.4 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $30,864, and the median income for a family is $36,286. Males have a median income of $27,417 versus $22,125 for females. The per capita income for the town is $13,100. 18.2% of the population and 13.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 25.4% of those under the age of 18 and 16.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
