Bernalillo County is a county located in the state of New Mexico. As of 2000, the population is 556,678. Its county seat is Albuquerque6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,027 km² (1,169 mi²). 3,020 km² (1,166 mi²) of it is land and 7 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.22% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 556,678 people, 220,936 households, and 141,178 families residing in the county. The population density is 184/km² (477/mi²). There are 239,074 housing units at an average density of 79/km² (205/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 70.75% White, 2.77% Black or African American, 4.16% Native American, 1.93% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 16.07% from other races, and 4.22% from two or more races. 41.96% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 220,936 households out of which 31.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.00% are married couples living together, 12.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.10% are non-families. 28.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.47 and the average family size is 3.06.

In the county the population is spread out with 25.30% under the age of 18, 10.30% from 18 to 24, 30.40% from 25 to 44, 22.40% from 45 to 64, and 11.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 95.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.90 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $38,788, and the median income for a family is $46,613. Males have a median income of $33,720 versus $26,318 for females. The per capita income for the county is $20,790. 13.70% of the population and 10.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 17.90% of those under the age of 18 and 9.10% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
