Bernard Heuvelmans (born 1916) was the founder of the science of cryptozoology, and an explorer, a researcher, and a writer on the subject.
Heuvelmans was formally trained as a zoologist, and early in his career he wrote an important paper on the classification of aardvark teeth.
He searched the world's oceans for the giant beasts, to substantiate the rumors and legends about animals known to local people but still unknown to science.
