J. Bernard Moffat is a Manx political campaigner and trade unionist.
Mec Vannin
He is one of the founder members of Mec Vannin and continues to play a prominent role in that organisation.
He was instrumental in establishing Mec Vannin's present policy of not putting up candidates for Tynwald, but rather criticising it from outside.
Celtic League
He has twice been secretary of the Celtic League, from (1984-88) and (1991-present)... the only person to do so.
However, his tenure has not been without controversy. In particular, some have members have felt that he has overemphasised what he terms "military monitoring", a long term personal interest, at the expense of more pressing issues, such as responding to devolution in Scotland and Wales, and forming associations between already devolved/independent areas such as the Isle of Man and Irish Republic. The main objections to this are that "military monitoring" is already dealt with by several other organisations such as the CND, and that it is not part of the Celtic league's aims.
