The so-called Bili Ape or Bondo Ape is a creature reported in Democratic Republic of the Congo. National Geographic reports that "The apes nest on the ground like gorillas but have a diet and features characteristic of chimpanzees." The creatures resemble chimpanzees, though they have some gorilla-like features and behavioural traits, leading to questions of classification. Esteban Sarmiento, an anatomist with the American Museum of Natural History reports that the "Bili Ape" is probably a chimpanzee, and "could represent a fourth subspecies or change our present understanding of where to draw the divisions between subspecies."
