Bill Black is best known for playing ('slapped/rockabilly' upright double) bass on the early (late 1950s) Elvis Presley recordings including "Good Rockin' Tonight", "Baby Let's Play House", "Mystery Train", "That's All Right", "Hound Dog", "Too Much" and "Jailhouse Rock".
After leaving Presley he had a subsequent career as the leader of Bill Black's Combo which made a number of commercially successful instrumental records in the early 1960s.
He died of a brain tumour in 1965 and is buried in Forest Hill Cemetery, Midtown, Memphis Tennessee (see here (http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=4376&pt=William%20%27Bill%27%20Black)).
