Billings County is a county located in the state of North Dakota. As of 2000, the population is 888. Its county seat is Medora6.

The Territorial legislature authorized Billings County in 1879, naming it for railroad executive Frederick H. Billings. It was organized seven years later, on May 4, 1886, at a meeting in Medora. The county's area was later reduced by erecting new counties: Golden Valley County in 1912 and Slope County in 1915.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,987 km² (1,153 mi²). 2,982 km² (1,151 mi²) of it is land and 5 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.17% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 888 people, 366 households, and 255 families residing in the county. The population density is 0/km² (1/mi²). There are 529 housing units at an average density of 0/km² (0/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.76% White, 0.00% Black or African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.11% Pacific Islander, 0.11% from other races, and 0.90% from two or more races. 0.34% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 366 households out of which 29.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.60% are married couples living together, 4.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.10% are non-families. 26.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.43 and the average family size is 2.95.

In the county the population is spread out with 24.90% under the age of 18, 4.50% from 18 to 24, 26.60% from 25 to 44, 28.00% from 45 to 64, and 16.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 112.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 112.40 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $32,667, and the median income for a family is $35,750. Males have a median income of $32,500 versus $21,000 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,186. 12.80% of the population and 10.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 11.00% of those under the age of 18 and 12.80% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
