Map of Bireun in Aceh, Indonesia Bireun is an Indonesian town in the special territory of Aceh on the northeast coast of the island of Sumatra on the Straits of Malacca. The location is at 5° 12' 18" N, 96° 42' 06" E (decimal degrees: 5.205 N 96.702 E). It is sometimes known as Bireuen or Biroen.
On 26 December 2004, it was hit hard by tsunami spawned by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake.
