One of the most famous historical natives besides Mother Shipton was Blind Jack.
John Metcalf, as his real name was, was born on August 15th, 1717 into a working class family and had a typical upbringing. At the age of six he contracted small pox which resulted in him losing his sight, although this did not deter him from carrying on in life as normal as possible, learning to play the violin, guiding people around Knaresborough, and later in his life became a roadmaker, building hundreds of roads in the North of England as well as bridges.
Blind Jack died in 1810 at the age of 92 in Spofforth.
