Bloom has a range of meaning all related to the appearance on a surface of a film or substance.
Bloom on fruit
The bloom on fruit such as plums or grapes is visible as a white or bluish covering. Once thought to be wild yeast cells , it is now known to be waxy coverings to the epithelial cells of the fruit, presumably intended to provide some protection from environmental damage.
Algal bloom
Algal blooms are sudden population explosions in marine or freshwater algae. Thes can result in severe aesthehetic impacts and can cause toxic poisoning of fish and shellfish. Where blue-green algae are involved there are potential toxic risks to mammals including man. Algal blooms are often a sign of eutrophication or nutrient enrichment of the water body
Flowers
Bloom is the general expression describing the aesthetic experience of one or more flowers on a flowering plant.
Also used as a metaphor for young people at the peak of their beauty or health.
