Bob Backlund - Definition and Overview

Bob Backlund (born August 14, 1950) an American professional wrestler and minor politician. Backlund was an amateur wrestling star at the University of Minnesota before turning pro. Backlund joined the WWWF and became the World Champion on February 20, 1978 defeatng "Superstar" Billy Graham. Backlund had some disputed title changes in Japan sometime in 1979 with Antonio Inoki. He is best known for his champion vs champion matches with the legendary Harley Race and the flamboyant "Nature Boy" Ric Flair. Backlund lost the title on December 26, 1983 to the Iron Sheik and dropped off the scene soon after. He reappeared in 1994 and began feuding with the fans and the current champion, Bret Hart. He defeated Hart for the title but lost it in less than a week to Diesel. Backlund ran for Congress unsuccessfully in 2000.
