Bodh Gaya - Definition and Overview

Bodh Gaya or Bodhgaya is the location of Gautama Siddhartha's attainment of Enlightenment. The complex, about 60 miles from Patna in the state of Bihar in India, holds the Mahabodhi Temple with the diamond throne (called the Vajrasana) and the holy Bodhi tree. For Buddhists, this is one of four pilgrimage sites related to the life of Gautama Buddha, the other three being Kushinagar, Lumbini, and Sarnath.

Bodh Gaya, as of 2002, is an UNESCO World Heritage Site specifically nominated for the international World heritage program.

The Sri Maha Bodhi tree in Sri Lanka is a sapling of this tree.
