The Bombardier Canadair Regional Jet (CRJ) is a small Canadian airliner based originally on the Canadair Challenger business jet. It is in service with airlines in the US, Europe and the Far East, including Mesa Airlines in the US, Lufthansa in Germany, Comair in the US, Brit Air in France and Duo Airways in the UK.

Design studies commenced in 1987, with the first prototype flying on May 10 1991.

Variants

  • CRJ-100 - original 52-seat version
  • CRJ-200 - similar to CRJ-100, but with improved engines
  • CRJ-700 - stretched 70-seat version. The CRJ-700 is equipped with the General Electric CF34-2C10 engine. Maximum speed is Mach .85 at a maximum altitude of 41,000 feet. Competes with the Embraer 170. CRJ-700 comes in two subvariants - Series 701 and Series 705 - which differ slightly in dimensions and seating capacity.
  • CRJ-900 - stretched 86-seat version. Competes with the Embraer 175.
