Boston's hardcore punk scene was one of the biggest scenes in the nation, due in part to the city's working class tradition and large college presence.
Top bands were SS Decontrol, Gang Green, and, though not really "hardcore", Mission of Burma.
While Boston produced almost no nationally notable hardcore bands, it contained arguably the most loyal local fanbase, and the most notoriously hostile locals.
A group around SS Decontrol called "The Boston Crew" was a militant straight edge group that was borderline violent in expressing their disgust with excess.
The highlight of the New England hardcore era was the This Is Boston, Not LA LP, which was a compilation of local artists.
