Bougainville Copper Limited - Definition and Overview

Bougainville Copper Ltd is a copper gold and silver mining company that operated the Panguna open cut mine in Bougainville. It dominated the economy of the island in the 1970s and 1980s and even played a large part in the economy of Papua New Guinea.

The mine closed in 1989 as a result of continuing sabotage arising from disputes with the local population over land ownership and the distribution of royalties.

The company was controlled by CRA Ltd. an Australian company which in turn was dominated by the English mining company Rio Tinto Zinc. CRA held 53.6%, PNG government 19.1%, the rest was held publicly.
