Bounty Bay is named for the HMAV Bounty, a British naval vessel whose 18th centurymutiny was immortalized in the novelMutiny on the Bounty and the numerous subsequent motion pictures made of it. Current Pitcairn Islanders are largely lineal descendants of the mutineers, as exhibited by some of their surnames. The remains of the vessel, burned by the mutineers, are still visible in the bay.
Travelers to Pitcairn are usually brought in by longboat into Bounty Bay.
