|
|
Brand is a play by the Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen. It is a verse tragedy, written in 1865 and first performed in Stockholm on 24 March 1885.Brand was an intellecual play causing many people to think out of the box.
Brand is a conservative, fundamentalist, priest who insists that rules and customs are strictly adhered to and that people follow God with great fear. It is this inflexible attitude which finally brings his downfall. In his dying words at the end of the play Brand screams out a prayer to God of why he, the man who followed God in every single way, is not being saved. The final words are from an unknown voice: "He is the God of mercy".
