Brian Jonestown Massacre - Definition and Overview

The Brian Jonestown Massacre is a psychedelic rock band originally from San Francisco, California, United States, led by Anton Newcombe.

The band has undergone a large number of personnel changes ; Newcombe is the only member who has played with the Brian Jonestown Massacre since its beginning. The band is best known for their open advocacy of drug use and their feud with The Dandy Warhols, which is the subject of the 2004 documentary Dig!

Originally Newcombe was heavily influenced by The Rolling Stones' psychedelic phase - the name comes from Stones guitarist Brian Jones combined with a reference to cult leader Jim Jones, and their second album's title,"Their Satanic Majesties' Second Request", is a reference to the Stones' 1967 album "Their Satanic Majesties' Request". Newcombe's work in the 2000s has expanded into aesthetic dimensions approximating the UK shoegazing genre of the 1990s and incorporating influences from world music, especially Middle Eastern and Brazilian.

Newcombe currently lives in Los Angeles, California.
