The Bundesadler (German eagle, literally "federal eagle") is the national emblem and the official coat of arms of Germany. It is set in the colors of the German national flag: black, red and gold, the colors of the old Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation coat of arms. A black eagle is displayed on a gold colored background with a red beak and claws. The eagle has a long tradition as symbol for Germany, it is originally the eagle used by the Roman Empire, as the Holy Roman Empire considered itself as its successor. Its current form was determined by President Theodor Heuss on January 20, 1950.
