Burwash Burwash

Burwash - Definition and Overview

For the Canadian churchman see Nathaniel Burwash, for the University of Toronto building see Burwash Hall.

Burwash is a village in East Sussex, England. It lies on the River Dudwell. about mid-way between Tunbridge Wells and Hastings. Its main claim to fame is that for half of his life Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) lived in the village at Batemans. Smuggling took place here in the 18th century (several smuggler's graves can still be seen in the churchyard of St. Bartholomew's); and earlier it had been one of the villages involved in the Wealden iron industry.
