Butts County is a county located in the state of Georgia. As of 2000, the population is 19,522. The county's county seat is Jackson, Georgia6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 492 km² (190 mi²). 483 km² (187 mi²) of it is land and 9 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.79% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 19,522 people, 6,455 households, and 4,867 families residing in the county. The population density is 40/km² (105/mi²). There are 7,380 housing units at an average density of 15/km² (40/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 69.22% White, 28.82% Black or African American, 0.39% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.34% from other races, and 0.95% from two or more races. 1.42% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 6,455 households out of which 34.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.00% are married couples living together, 13.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.60% are non-families. 20.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.73 and the average family size is 3.15.

In the county the population is spread out with 24.10% under the age of 18, 9.20% from 18 to 24, 33.00% from 25 to 44, 23.50% from 45 to 64, and 10.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 114.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 117.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $39,879, and the median income for a family is $44,937. Males have a median income of $33,155 versus $21,869 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,016. 11.50% of the population and 8.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.00% of those under the age of 18 and 16.70% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
