CMU is an acronym for three different universities:

• Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania [1] (http://www.cmu.edu)
• Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant, Michigan [2] (http://www.cmich.edu)
• Chiang Mai University in Chiangmai, Thailand [3] (http://www.cmu.ac.th/)

Central Michigan University claims "CMU" as a trademark: [4] (http://www.cmich.edu/licensing/faqs.htm). A search through the USPTO's trademark database will show that the trademark is not registered. However, when Carnegie Mellon tried to register the trademark "CMU," it failed when Central Michigan objected, claiming prior use.

Regardless of the legal angle, Carnegie Mellon's official policy is to eschew the use of the acronym on official materials, in recognition of Central Michigan's claimed priority. (This policy, naturally, has absolutely no effect on the acronym's unofficial popularity, and the domain name www.cmu.edu remains the official website of Carnegie Mellon University.)
