On January 23, 2005, an unidentified homeless person set fire to a control room at the Chambers Street station. The room was nearly destroyed and seriously crippled the A and C lines. Initial estimates put the restoration of service as taking 3 to 5 years, but soon thereafter a revised estimate of 6 to 9 months was given. A rapidly scrounged group of spare parts from around the system was assembled, allowing an approximately 70 percent restoration of service by February 2, 2005, only 10 days later. However, to fully repair all the damage will take time, as new parts must be accquired to replace the destroyed ones.
