Cancer Research UK is a United Kingdom based charity, established in 2002 by the merger of The Cancer Research Campaign and the Imperial Cancer Research Fund. Its stated goals are:
- To research the effective treatments for cancer.
- To research strategies for the prevention of cancer.
- To improve the quality of care available to cancer sufferers.
- To inform the public about cancer.
As of 2004 the charity spends more £190 million per year on cancer research, supporting the work of 3,000 scientists, doctors and nurses. The majority of its funds come from donations made by the general public and its 650 high-street charity shops.
Cancer Research UK is supported by a number of celebrities, including Timothy West, Michael Aspel and Robert Winston.
