Candelabrum Candelabrum

Candelabrum - Definition and Overview

A candlestick or candelabrum is a decorative holder for one or more candles, often shaped as a column or pedestal. Those who use them consider them a part of their home's interior design. A special kind of Jewish candelabrum is the menorah.

In popular culture, candlesticks are featured in the nursery rhyme Jack Be Nimble; as the character 'Lumiere' in Disney's Beauty and the Beast; and in the game Clue. Many of Liberace's piano performances, included a candelabrum on top of the grand piano.

Candlestick was also the colloquial name for the type of telephone most frequently encountered in the United States and many other countries during the 1920s. See Candlestick telephone.
