Canmore - Definition

The three peaks of Three Sisters Mountain at Canmore, Alberta

Canmore is a town in Alberta, Canada with a permanent population of 11,458 (2003 municipal census). Canmore is located a few kilometres east of Banff National Park on the Bow River. The mountain setting is noted for the Three Sisters Mountain.

The Canmore Nordic centre provides world class trails for use by mountain bikers and cross country skiers.

Although still considered a town, Canmore is larger than a number of cities in Alberta, and concerns over its urban growth in the midst of protected national and provincial park land has led the town's leaders to place a limit on future development; the town is expected to reach its maximum "build out" following the completion of the SilverTip and Three Sisters Mountain Village developments sometime around 2015-2020.
