Capitals of Hungary - Definition and Overview

During the history of Hungary, the country has had more capitals. These were:

Roman time

The capital of the province of Pannonia was:

• Aquincum (today Óbuda)

Later there was a fourfold division, with capitals within today's Hungary:

• Savaria (Szombathely)
• Sopianae (Pécs)

There were also two capitals outside of today's Hungary but on territories that were part of the Kingdom of Hungary in history:

• Siscia (Sisak/Sziszek)
• Sirmium (Sremska Mitrovica)

Hungary

Capitals of the country were:

• Székesfehérvár and Esztergom from around 1000 until 1361, but the function of a capital was not that clear as it is today
• Buda 1361-1541
• Pozsony 1541-1848 for the Kingdom of Hungary, and Gyulafehérvár for the independent Transylvania 1541-1699.
• Buda again 1848-1873, but the country was part of Austria from 1849 till 1867, so the true capital was Vienna (Bécs).
